Born in
the Adirondacks of New York, Eric fished many famous trout
waters as a youngster and was greatly influenced by local
legend Fran Betters. Once a professional musician, Eric now is
an electronics technician in the hospital communications arena
and freelances when it doesn't interfere with his fishing and
tying. |

The Story:
Henry's Fork
Flies |
The Henry’s Fork of the Snake
River in Idaho, aside from being one of the most beautiful places
I’ve seen, is a great fly fishing laboratory. One can experience
several hatches in one day, and even several hatches at once on it’s
fertile water. When it became clear that I would be able to return
there this year, I made the decision to fish nothing but flies that
I tied myself. On my last trip out I was stuck by the beauty and
functionality of the flies tied for both Mike Lawson’s and Rene
Harrop’s shops in Last Chance, and decided to tie most of the flies
I would need for this trip using their patterns. After all, who
knows more about what works on the Henry’s Fork than these two
legends? I began by obtaining Mike’s video "Tying Flies for Spring
Creeks and Tailwaters", and then I bought sample flies from Rene
Harrop’s shop in an effort to "get in the ballpark". I also used as
a reference an article written by Rene for the March 2001 issue of
Fly Fisherman magazine called "Pondering PMDs". Most of the
materials used were purchased from the House of Harrop, and
I would highly recommend that anyone tying these patterns go "to the
source" for materials, as theirs are of the highest quality.
